Character Information
Character Name: Katsuki Bakugou
Canon: My Hero Academia
Canon Point: Chapter 219 | CRAU from
Journal:
Character Background: HERE.
SEPTEMBER 2019: Katsuki arrived in Fellden (a fantasy faction game) in September of 2019. Initially he spent his time getting used to his new circumstances: being summoned to the Court of Stars to save his word (and all other worlds). Like all Star members, he was branded with a tattoo upon arrival: his was the Gemini starsign on his left uper bicep. Katsuki was wary of other people and spent a great deal of time trying to get his Quirk to work properly again, but he also started learning swordplay from the Court soldiers. He went on a Quest with Sarah Williams and Aqua to the Witchlands, where he was tasked with defeating a monster in the nearby bogs for a witch. He worked together with Aqua to bring it down, and was rewarded with beginner's Restoration magic, which he would work to strengthen through the end of the game to Mastery. Before the end of the month, all faction members were summoned to the Harvest Festival. It was a normal boring party in his opinion until suddenly midway through the Branded attacked, killing one civilian for every otherworlder who had been summoned. Katsuki fought back and did his best to help evacuate others...although he still mostly fought back.Character Personality:
OCTOBER 2019: In October Wendigo and other monsters stalked the night. Daytime hours were spent warding against the creatures with spells they were taught on the fly and reinforcing defenses. Katsuki spent his daytime hours warding areas and strengthening defenses, and in the nighttime hours fought arae and spartae. He also used his strengthening Restoration skills to help others.
NOVEMBER 2019: At the start of the month Katsuki escorted Nazim, a traveling swordsman/merchant, to Lureri and other places. Along the way he was instructed in swordplay, and Nazim agreed to oversee his training until he attained Expert-level talent there. Later in November, everyone entered a maze in the Gods' Wood, where they could help, hinder, or stop the revival of Temperance (a god). Katsuki spent most of his time in the maze with Sarah Williams & Ashe (Overwatch), and they met and entertained a monster child and received some information from his mother among other things...they managed to reach the center of the maze and stole and broke the staff of the priest rising Temperance. Despite their efforts to hinder, the god was revived.
DECEMBER 2019: December saw Katsuki getting the first and only castmate he would have in-game during his Fellden tenure: Izuku Midoriya. He was less than cordial to Deku upon locating his classmate, but from that point on they kept close watch on one another (although when pressed Katsuki would claim it was only due to familiarity). There was a planned party for Christmas including both factions, but before that point Katsuki went on a scouting trip to explore Lureri. Izuku invited himself along, and the two learned for the first time of the "Hanged Man", discovering a tarot card there which would lead to later investigations.
JANUARY 2020: In January an even more official war between the factions was announced, and the Court of Stars attacked the Moon Temple at its home base. In preparation for the event Katsuki participated in scouting missions and training, but during the battles he didn't kill any enemy soldiers. Instead, he focused on disarming and evacuation. He did however help several of his CR during the battles (he ambushed a monster with Edelgard and healed Izuku's wounds). Also in January, the Emperor promised to protect the worlds of all the Star Court, branding each with another promise tattoo: for Katsuki, his was a shield on his left hipbone.
FEBRUARY 2020: In February Katsuki's efforts focused on helping civilians rebuild and relocate. He also "cheered up" Izuku, who was upset about being negatively branded following his efforts to help civilians on the other side of the war. He also spoke with Deku on the Eve of Promise and acquired one more promise tattoo when he and Izuku discussed having one another's backs while in Fellden. His half of this tattoo is half a sword on his right inner forearm.
MARCH 2020: In March Katsuki took on a Quest to investigate the Hanged Man tarot card that he had discovered when scouting out Lureri. He invited Deku once again as backup, and they discovered they needed to rescue several civilians who had been captured from Stars territory - all of them were high-ranking civilians in that they helped the faction a lot, but none of them were named NPCs (I as a player was given leave to decide on names/personalities in those guidelines). The Hanged Man cult was using these selfless people as a sacrifice to their god in a ritual, which they were in the middle of when Deku and Katsuki tracked them down. Initially the pair tried to negotiate for the civilians to be released, even offering up themselves in trade - but while the cult members agreed on the trade, they only released half of the civilians. Katsuki told the released civilians to run back to Deku's Thunderbird mount as he and Deku took on the cultists to try to save the remaining civilians. During the battle Izuku was captured after the cultists killed two of the remaining civilians, and Katsuki was forced to choose between saving his classmate or the remaining civilian - he chose his classmate, and escaped with the three civilians they did save. Katsuki and their rescued healer worked to save Deku, and during his attempts to save his classmate Katsuki accidentally branded the pair with a promise tattoo - his half of it manifested as Thunderbird on his back with wings spread over his shoulderblades. He and Izuku argue about Katsuki's choice after the idiot wakes up, but Izuku shuts up when Katsuki demands to know what he would have done if the situation had been reversed.
APRIL 2020: Katsuki turned 17 on the 20th and received a birthday present from Izuku, the only person who knew about his birthday. He was predictably a dick about the gift and demanded to know if Deku was giving him a handicap (he was not). During April he attended the Feast of the Gods, where Katsuki was a wallflower grump who didn't like parties.
MAY 2020: Fellden came to a close in May 2020.
You know the rival character who's constantly at odds with the peaceful everyman hero of the story? That rival is Katsuki Bakugou. He's loud, rude, and generally explosive in temper and demeanour. He's constantly striving to be the best, and he's a perfectionist in the worst (or best) way, always moving forward and never giving up even when he honestly probably should. He's rarely shown not scowling or yelling, and when he does smile it tends to be a terrifying slasher grin because he's just That Way, apparently. When he was a little kid he had an innocent grin, but that grin hasn't been seen in years and Katsuki has settled into being a grouchy old man in his teenagerdom.Character Abilities (CANON):
Despite being extremely antagonistic just in general even when he's in "neutral" mode, Katsuki isn't a bad person at his core. Yes, he bullied the main character in their childhood and yes, he is an asshole pretty regularly to everyone he knows, but Katsuki actually leans harder into the "his bark is worse than his bite" trope these days in the manga more than he doesn't and even during his bullying days he mostly bullied Deku verbally than anything else, with only one incident stepping over the line where he blew up Deku's notebook (in previous incidents he'd even returned the notebook to Deku unharmed after snatching it from his "friends" who snatched it from Deku first). While he is a dick to everyone, he appears to mostly be an extreme introvert who prefers not to hang around other people when he has the choice and who doesn't see any reason for social niceties at all ever. What friends he does gather tend to ignore his grumpiness and insults and just sort of laugh at him, and while he'll yell back at them he does just let them flit around him and hang off him with a sort of low-level grumbly sort of emotion.
Katsuki's never one to go easy on people in a fight or anything, but he yells at his classmates more often than he actually tries to physically assault them. And even if he bitches to hell and back about helping his idiot friends and classmates, Katsuki will actually almost always end up helping. He just has to be a melodramatic bitch about everything, because he's an emotionally stunted moron. He wants to be a hero more than anything else, and as a result he actually does want to help people out in his own brash kind of way, but he's...not great at making it obvious? During the license exam, when students are trying to gain their temporary hero licenses, they're put through their paces with a "rescue" scenario where a disaster has hit a city within a biodome and they have to handle the disaster and rescue all civilians. Katsuki fails the entire exam ONLY because of this portion, where he yells at every single civilian he saves and otherwise treats them rudely, snapping and growling as Kirishima and Kaminari continuously tried to run interference for him - despite Katsuki competently saving the civilians and acing all other portions of the exam. His bad attitude frequently and repeatedly gets him into shit, and as a result he's getting better but he still gets a pretty bad review pretty recently in the manga when everyone was practicing interview skills.
Thanks to character development he tries to go about his personal interactions more carefully now, to some degree - not all the time, and he's regularly a dick to specific people (Deku and Todoroki), but Katsuki is aware of his own shortcomings these days. When being made to care for a group of children, he tells a bully child that "If all you ever do is look down on people, you won't be able to recognize your own weaknesses." - while of course obviously speaking of himself. While Katsuki didn't realize that he had these weaknesses until he hit high school because he had been looking down on people all his life, he has come to realize what he was doing and how it made him weaker, and he has been working on recognizing his own shortcomings (while still being super confident about things). While Katsuki's attitude still sometimes comes off as villainous at first glance, he absolutely isn't a villain at all and has canonically very firmly refused an offer to join the villain side because he's already been won over by the way heroes are. Even though he's a dick, Katsuki has firm standards and morals, and he doesn't appreciate people trying to budge him outside of those zones.
Katsuki is also a very intelligent person despite the hair trigger temper and his tendency to overreact to everything. Katsuki, when he's calm, gives good and honest advice that's well-thought through and which usually helps those who have been lucky enough to earn it from him. He's also able to come up with regularly winning strategies in battle at the drop of a hat, relying on instinct and talent to finish things flawlessly. He's one of the top students in his class scholastically despite the way he looks like a thug, and it shows. Katsuki can occasionally show his more serious and mature side verbally as well so long as no one taps any of his many rage buttons. Even when he's being angry-grumpy, however, he can come off as more thoughtful than you'd think from the outset. When visiting the Todoroki family, for example, Katsuki yells a lot about how they should keep their private matters private, but he also loudly yells about cleaning up (he does most of it with Deku) and yell-compliments the cooking and so on and so forth.
When it comes to Katsuki's downsides, they are all pretty much centered on the same thing: his ridiculous temper and his superiority/inferiority complex. Despite having a huge ego and a lot of pride, Katsuki actually gets bent out of shape when he perceives people to be better than him, although he's getting vaguely better about this as the manga continues. His biggest problem with Deku has always been that he got it in his head that Deku thought he was "better" than Katsuki because Deku repeatedly tried to help him out - which never meant Deku thought he was weak (it was the opposite) but which the younger Katsuki took to be just that because people didn't actually usually offer him a hand up since he pretty much never needed one. Katsuki has a hard time being traditionally nice to people (he has rude bitch disease) and he isn't always the smoothest about teamwork - in-universe, he's pulled it off because he's always worked with people who put up with his bullshit. With strangers who don't Get him, it's harder.
Motivations? There's only one. To be a hero who always wins...so, the rest of his personality all falls into line with that. It's just that as he's grown up over the course of the series he has come to realize that the hero who always wins has to also be a hero who always saves. Win to save, save to win.
EXPLOSION: Katsuki is from a canon where most people have a single superpower (called Quirks), and his allows him to secrete nitroglycerin-like sweat and detonate it at will from his hands to cause explosions. Basically...his hands are ticking time bombs (but he has control of them). The more he sweats, the more powerful he gets. Gross. It's worth noting his Quirk is very powerful and he's versatile in how he uses it - he can even basically "fly" with his Quirk powering blasts to keep him airborne, although it's not true flight it's just...being very acrobatic.Character Abilities (CRAU):
GENERAL: Katsuki's an athletic guy, and training to be a hero; he's above-average in fighting skills and strength. Beyond the obvious athletics ability and superpower, Katsuki is apparently an amazing chef and excellent at cleaning, and he's naturally talented at bookwork. He can also flawlessly play the drums. Katsuki's that character who just happens to be Good at a lot of bullshit, without seeming to try, although he puts in 1000% effort into anything he does. For fun: His official stats from the latest guidebook.
RESTORATION (MASTER): As per the game info pages: "Healing spells fall under the school of restoration! This can be healing yourself or others of wounds, poison, or magical effects (such as a paralyze spell). Restoration is also used to place resistance spells on people; this can be resisting specific types of magic, poisons, and physical attacks." Katsuki's learning efforts focused more on healing wounds and magical effects rather than to place resistance spells on people, so he doesn't have much/any experience with that portion while being very good at the other portion.Items:
SWORDPLAY (MASTER): Thanks to his efforts with Nazim and his training after working with the swordsman, Katsuki achieved mastery over the blade in Fellden.
SHAPESHIFTING (ADEPT): His initial training was under Sarah Williams before she left, but Katsuki worked with NPCs after that to train his ability to shapeshift into a wolf and a hawk. He later received a blessing that would allow him to speak in his shape-shifted form.
DESTRUCTION (EXPERT): Destruction magic with a focus in water spells to balance out his explosions. As per the game info pages: "Destruction spells are just as they say; this branch of magic is for offensive spells and manipulating the elements. Fire, earth, water, air, electricity, darkness, light—you name it and the school of destruction can teach you how to fight with it." Basically, he was specifically training on how to manipulate water in order to cover some of his current weaknesses.
MINOR EVENT SPELLS: During events, characters often had the opportunity to learn certain smaller-scale spells or cantrips. Among those Katsuki picked up were the following spells:• Minor fire spell (flame to light fires, etc; mostly picked up for academic purposes since he already...has Explosion...)
• Minor ward spell to keep monsters away
• Minor trap spell to...trap a monster in place
• Basic defense rune
• Basic fire rune (again, learned just to prove he Could)
• Minor illusion rune (allows him to draw small illusions in the air that last up to two minutes)
• Casual clothes (wearing)Other: N/A
• Winter hero costume, which includes two Grenade-gauntlets and a belt of grenades (All of these run on his sweat. It's gross)
• Wallet & hero license
• Ring with Court of Stars insignia (cloaks aura for 24 hours, completely fucking useless in Tabula Rasa)
• Bag of golden powder. "Sprinkling a bit on his sword will allow it to light up with golden lightning for a short time (a few minutes on average) and can greatly damage foes. The pouch allows up to 10 uses." USELESS, AGAIN, THANK U TR
• Sword that switches metals automatically depending on what foe he is facing (in Fellden, certain monsters were weak to certain metals); "when facing extremely powerful ones (such as the wendigo), the sword will take on a magical property to ensure more damage is done". Obviously the metal-switching wouldn't currently be usable nor would his ability to call up and dispel the sword at will. He'll have to carry it like a LOSER.
• Bag of holding that "will hold up to 100 pounds of items–no living creatures, including humans, can be stored in it! It will only ever feel like he is carrying 3 pounds no matter how much or little is within the bag and be appropriately decorated in "edgy teenage boy" aesthetic. To retrieve items from it, Katsuki will need to speak the name of the item and reach into the bag to take it out! No rummaging required." Since magic stuff isn't working currently it's just...an edgy teenage boy aesthetic bag. Think black with skulls.
• A coat with an intricately embroidered skull on the back with explosions for eyes.
• A cooling salve from Deku which actually probably still works. He hates it, thanks.
• Compass, used for the Fellden network and thus pretty useless here. It would probably work as a compass at least if directions were a concept.
